Syphilis is a chronic, sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. lt is known for its distinct clinical progression through four stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary (late) syphilis. The primary stage is characterized by a painless sore (chancre) at the infection site, while the secondary stage often presents with a rash and flu-like symptoms. The preferred treatment for all stages of syphilis is penicillin administered via injection. Benzathine penicillin G (BPG) is the first-line therapy for early syphilis.
