HBsAg, or Hepatitis B Surface Antigen, is a key protein found on the surface of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Its detection in a blood test is the primary method for diagnosing an active HBV infection, whether acute or chronic. As the first serologic marker to appear after infection, HBsAg can be detected as early as one week post-exposure. A positive HBsAg test indicates that a person is infectious and can transmit the virus to others. Persistent positivity for more than six months typically suggests chronic hepatitis B, a major risk factor for liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, screening for HBsAg is crucial for early diagnosis, patient management, and preventing transmission.
