Gardnerella vaginalis is a Gram-variable anaerobic bacterium commonly colonizing the human vagina. It is the primary pathogen linked to bacterial vaginosis, a prevalent vaginal infection.
In healthy women, beneficial lactobacilli dominate the vaginal flora and suppress its overgrowth. When the microbial balance breaks down, this bacterium multiplies rapidly, causing symptoms like abnormal grayish discharge, fishy odor and mild vaginal irritation.
It spreads mainly via sexual contact and may raise risks of pelvic inflammation or pregnancy complications. Diagnosis relies on microscopic exams and vaginal tests. Antibiotics are the standard treatment to restore normal vaginal microbiota.
